The Myrtle Avenue–Chambers Street Line (later the 10, then the M train) used the Myrtle Viaduct (pictured) along its route between Manhattan and Middle Village. Until 1914, the only service on the Myrtle Avenue Line east of Grand Avenue was a local service between Park Row (via the Brooklyn Bridge) and Middle Village (numbered 11 in 1924). [6]

The NYCTA, a public authority presided over by New York City, was created in 1953 to take over subway, bus, and streetcar operations from the city. [14] In 1968 the state-level MTA took control of the NYCTA, and in 1970 the city entered the New York City fiscal crisis. It closed many elevated subway lines that became too expensive to maintain.

It is the only non- shuttle service in the system that does not run within the borough of Manhattan. The G serves two stations in Queens —Court Square and 21st Street, both in Long Island City. Prior to 2010, it served all stations on the IND Queens Boulevard Line between Court Square and 71st Avenue in Forest Hills.
