East Side Access (ESA) is a public works project in New York City that extended the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) two miles from its Main Line in Queens to the new Grand Central Madison station under Grand Central Terminal on Manhattan's East Side.
The MTA is constructing and managing the improvement project as part of the adjacent East Side Access project to bring the LIRR to Grand Central Terminal. The MTA estimated that East Side Access will be complete in early 2023.
An agreement for the first phase was reached in early 2019, and a groundbreaking ceremony took place in December 2022. New Haven Line trains are tentatively expected to run into Penn Station in 2027. The opening of East Side Access will allow the expanded services to operate at Moynihan Train Hall, an expansion of Penn Station.
