The university's origins can be traced back to the New Paltz Classical School, which originally opened in 1828.After changing its name to the New Paltz Academy in 1833, the school was decimated by a fire in 1884, after which the school offered their land to the state government of New York contingent upon the establishment of a normal school.

Post is now LIU Post, the university's largest campus, at 307 acres (125 hectares) of historic 1920s mansions, gardens, athletic fields, art studios and performing arts space, broadcast television and radio stations, an on-campus sustainable energy facility, and the only on-campus equestrian facility on Long Island.
In 1946, degree conferring status was granted and the academy became a college. Two years later, the college was one of the original institutions incorporated into the State University of New York system. In 1949, just one year later, the newly-minted university took on its current name, the State University of New York Maritime College. [4]
