The University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee ( UW–Milwaukee, UWM, or Milwaukee) is a public urban research university in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. [5] It is the largest university in the Milwaukee metropolitan area and a member of the University of Wisconsin System. It is also one of the two doctoral degree -granting research universities and the second largest university in Wisconsin.
Founded in 1885 as Wisconsin State Normal School, it became Wisconsin State Teachers College-Milwaukee in 1927, and Wisconsin State College–Milwaukee in 1951. Originally at a downtown site, the Normal School subsequently moved to the Lakeside campus. In 1956, it became part of the then University of Wisconsin, and subsequently the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee's primary (Eastside) campus.

In 1964, the school merged with two other local day schools (Milwaukee University School and Milwaukee-Downer Seminary) to become the University School of Milwaukee. MCD's facilities became the South Campus of the new school, which operated until it closed in 1985.
