In some Scottish universities, a Master of Arts (MA; Scots: Maister o Arts, Scottish Gaelic: Maighstir nan Ealan) is the holder of a degree awarded to undergraduates, usually as a first degree. It follows either a three-year general or four-year Honours degree course in humanities or social sciences and is awarded by one of several institutions.
Until recently, all undergraduates studied for the degree of Bachelor of Arts. The BFA was introduced in 1978. Holders of the degrees of BA and BFA both proceed in time to the degree of Master of Arts (MA).
Most British bachelor's degrees are honours degrees and indicated by putting " (Hons)" after the degree abbreviation. A student achieving a pass grade, below honours standard, may be awarded an "ordinary degree" or a "pass degree" and may not add " (Hons)".
