This separate chain of schools is currently called Bryant & Stratton College. In 1878 the Providence branch of Bryant & Stratton was sold to a teacher at the school, Thomas Stowell. Stowell died in 1916 the school was sold again and merged with Henry Jacobs' Rhode Island Commercial School (founded 1898).

Bryant was born on December 21, 1821, in Ebley in Gloucestershire, England, to John Bryant, a farmer, and Pamela (Collins) Bryant.
He graduated from Bryant & Stratton College (1862) and Yale University (1867), where he was Phi Beta Kappa and a member of Skull and Bones. Additionally, he graduated from Andover Theological Seminary (1870), and Beloit College (1889) with a DD. He was pastor of the Highland Congregational Church in Roxbury, Boston (1870–1881).
