Metro Center station is the central hub station of the Washington Metro, a rapid transit system in Washington, D.C. The station is located in Downtown, centered on the intersection of 12th Street NW and G Street NW. It is one of the 4 major transfer points in the Metrorail network.
The system is not centered on any single station, but Metro Center is at the intersection of the Red, Orange, Blue, and Silver Lines. The station is also the location of WMATA's main sales office, which closed in 2022.
As of 2023, the system has 98 active stations on six lines with 129 miles (208 km) of tracks. The Washington Metro system was conceived as an alternative to constructing a large freeway system throughout the Washington, D.C. area.
