There is no major difference, it's just that you can use a username with the different domain. I have a rocketmail.com email address I started with Yahoo many years ago. I recently started a mirror myyahoo.com account with the same name usename. I updated my new email address with senders of emails I frequently receive.

If someone hacks your account, changes your recovery email/information - Yahoo will not be able to recover. Someone who hacks an account can easily change all of this information. And we know how susceptible Yahoo is to this. Yahoo "Premium Support" told me it was escalated - but they still couldn't do anything unless I verified my email.
Yahoo is such a scam. So my girlfriend was having trouble signing in to her Yahoo Mail, the cookies on her computers browser were deleted, and it asks to verify with a phone number to actually log in. Problem is, we just recently changed phone service and have different numbers so she wasn't getting the code.
They won't charge you until they verify you to help you get into your account. But I'm going to save you some time - without access to your recovery methods they won't help you get access back. My guess is Yahoo's owners have simply quit investing in the platform. AOL pages, owned by the same company perform just as dismally. AOL and Yahoo were owned by Verizon, but the slowness seems to coincide with the sale to a new ownership group that simply doesn't want to invest in dying platforms.
