NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Times is fighting off Wordle “clones” — arguing that numerous games inspired by the mega-popular word-guessing game infringe on its copyright protections. Hundreds of copycats have emerged since Wordle skyrocketed to internet fame less than three years ago.
Wordle, the highly addictive game users are only allowed to play once a day and that has gone from 90 users to more than 300,000 in just about one month, has been sold to the New York Times.
In January 2022, The New York Times Company acquired Wordle, a word game developed by Josh Wardle in 2021, at a valuation in the "low-seven figures". The acquisition was proposed by David Perpich, a member of the Sulzberger family who proposed the purchase to Knight over Slack after reading about the game.
