That's the name the MTA has given the new tap-to-pay fare system that will eventually replace the MetroCard — and straphangers will give it a test starting Friday.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced additional progress on its rollout of OMNY, the system's new contactless payment system that is set to replace the MetroCard in 2023.
MTA officials plan to replace the MetroCard with OMNY in 2023. The system allows straphangers to use their smartphone, smart watch or contactless bank card to tap out a single-ride fare.
OMNY can currently be used to pay fares at all New York City Subway and Staten Island Railway stations, on all MTA buses, AirTrain JFK, Metro North 's Hudson Rail Link, and on the Roosevelt Island Tram; when completely rolled out, it will also replace the MetroCard on Bee-Line buses, and NICE buses.
The SmartLink card has been available to the public since July 2, 2007. Although the MetroCard used on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)'s transit system can also be used on the PATH, the reverse is not true for SmartLink, which cannot be used on the MTA's system.
Implemented in August 2019, riders are able to use their Visa, Mastercard, or AMEX contactless credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay at the fare gates on the Metrorail. As of February 2020, contactless bank cards and digital wallets are also accepted on Metrobuses.

Once the app leaves beta testing, though, the MTA has announced plans to combine eTix functionality into the MYmta app.
