The M7 is an electric multiple unit railroad car built by Bombardier, with delivery beginning in 2002, used by the MTA on the Long Island Rail Road (M7) and Metro-North Railroad (M7A). The M7 replaced the M1 railcars as well as the ACMUs on the Metro North, which had previously provided electric service on these lines.
At the same time, the MTA introduced the Cannonball West, a Sunday evening train between Montauk and Penn Station that would run nonstop between Westhampton and Jamaica and also offer Hamptons Reserve service, though on 2024 timetables, only the eastbound train is named the Cannonball.
They were designed to achieve 100 mph (161 km/h) running in service, achieving only 80 mph (129 km/h) in service due to track and signaling limitations. The LIRR cars also featured support for Automatic Train Operation, although this, too, was never seen in service. M3/M3A series
