The S48 and S98 constitutes two bus routes in Staten Island, New York, running primarily on Victory Boulevard and Forest Avenue, between St. George Ferry Terminal and Arlington. It is operated by the New York City Transit Authority. The S48 was originally the R107 bus route, and was renumbered to S107, then the S48 in 1989.
NYCT elected to extend the S40 instead of restoring S48 service since the route was closer to the facility. The extension was expected to cost $54,000 a year, and provide $20,000 in additional revenue.
Shortly afterwards a second route, the S48, was launched. The S48 travelled from Carrbrook to Ashton-under-Lyne via the Brushes estate and Stalybridge, effectively competing with route 348. Not long after its established presence, a full evening and Sunday service was introduced.
