The race followed its traditional route, which passes through all five boroughs of New York City. 47,839 people finished the event.
Bill Rodgers won his fourth and last New York City Marathon on another warm day in 2:11:42, overtaking Kirk Pfeffer who led for the first miles of the race. Grete Waitz again won the women's race with a finish time of 2:27:33, becoming the first woman ever to break 2:30.
BASKING RIDGE, NJ — The 2023 New York City Marathon kicks off on Sunday, Nov. 5 with tens of thousands of runners crossing that starting line including many from Basking Ridge.
In total, 35 men and 30 women have won the open division of the New York City Marathon, while nine men and seven women have won the wheelchair division. The winners have represented 22 countries: Americans have won the marathon the most, doing so on 32 occasions; Kenyans have won 26 times; and Norwegians 10 times.
