The Merchandise Mart (or the Merch Mart, or the Mart) is a commercial building located in downtown Chicago, Illinois. When it was opened in 1930, it was the largest building in the world, with 4 million square feet (372,000 m 2) of floor space. Early tenants include Bryant, Stratton & Packard's New York City Business College and the J.&C. Johnston Dry Goods company that opened in 1881. The building originally had five stories and a sixth story was added in 1919 by the architects Rouse & Goldstone .
