New York City is shown as divided into boroughs. In New York, a town is a municipal corporation, and is the major division of each county (excluding the five boroughs that comprise New York City), very similar to townships in other states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana.
In 1914, the New York State Legislature created Bronx County, making five counties coterminous with the five boroughs. The Bronx had a steady boom period during 1898–1929, with a population growth by a factor of six from 200,000 in 1900 to 1.3 million in 1930.
