The Van Cortlandt Park–242nd Street station is the northern terminal station of the New York City Subway's IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line. Located at the intersection of 242nd Street and Broadway ( US Route 9 ) in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx , it is served by the 1 train at all times.
The 9 Broadway–Seventh Avenue Local [1] was a rapid transit service in the A Division of the New York City Subway.Its route emblem, or "bullet", was colored red, since it used the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT)'s Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line for its entire route.

The routes were combined as a one-way pair on November 10, 1963, and kept the number 6.
The New York City Board of Transportation, a predecessor to the New York City Transit Authority, began to introduce replacements to older subway cars beginning with the R12 cars in 1948. With these cars, numbers were publicly designated to the former IRT lines. Lexington–Jerome trains were assigned the number 4.
