The current R service is the successor to the original route 2 of the Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation. [5] [6] When 2 service began on January 15, 1916, it ran between Chambers Street on the BMT Nassau Street Line and 86th Street on the BMT Fourth Avenue Line, using the Manhattan Bridge to cross the East River, and running via Fourth Avenue local. The N Broadway Express [3] is a rapid transit service in the B Division of the New York City Subway.Its route emblem, or "bullet," is colored yellow, since it uses the BMT Broadway Line in Manhattan.
The division comprises two brands: MTA Bus and MTA New York City Bus. While MTA Bus is an amalgamation of former private companies' routes, MTA New York City Bus is composed of public routes that were taken over by the city before 2005. The MTA also operates paratransit services and formerly operated Long Island Bus.
New Technology Train (NTT) [1] [2] [3] is the collective term for the modern passenger fleet of the New York City Subway that has entered service since the turn of the 21st century. This includes the current R142 , R142A , R143 , R160 , R179 , R188 and R211 models, along with the planned R262 and R268 models.
The doors on the R211s are 58 inches (150 cm) wide, compared to current MTA standard of 50 inches (130 cm), [5] [1] thereby projected to reduce station dwell time by 25 to 30 percent. [20] [21] This door width will also promote accessibility on the cars, making them the first fully accessible subway car in New York City. [22]
The New York City Transit Authority operates 24 rail yards for the New York City Subway system and one for the Staten Island Railway. [1] [2] [3] There are 10 active A Division yards and 11 active B Division yards, two of which are shared between divisions for storage and car washing.
