The New York City subways are patrolled by the NYPD Transit Bureau under contract since 1994. Since 2019, the MTA Police has officers conducting daily subway patrols in New York City in an effort to assist the NYPD in addressing quality of life issues, like homelessness, that affect commuters.

On January 4, 2024, a New York City Subway train derailed causing at least 26 people, mostly passengers, to suffer minor injuries. The incident happened when the first car of a 1 train collided with a disabled train that had been vandalized, both consisting of R62As, just north of the 96th Street station. [1]
The MTA started planning for a far west side service in 2013, in conjunction with the 7 train's extension to 34 Street - Hudson Yards. [5] It originally was planned to go from 59th Street to Spring Street, via the West Side Highway until 14th Street, and Washington / Greenwich Streets south of there.
