The University of Alberta (also known as U of A or UAlberta) (French: Université de l'Alberta) is a public research university located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It was founded in 1908 by Alexander Cameron Rutherford, [8] the first premier of Alberta, and Henry Marshall Tory, [9] the university's first president.
Edmonton's central core comprises Downtown Edmonton and its 11 surrounding neighbourhoods including Boyle Street, Central McDougall, McCauley, Oliver, Queen Mary Park, Riverdale and Rossdale on the north side of the North Saskatchewan River and Cloverdale, Garneau, Strathcona and the University of Alberta on the south side of the river. Carleton was chartered as a university by the provincial government in 1952 through The Carleton University Act, which was then amended in 1957, giving the institution its current name. [4] The university is named after the now-dissolved Carleton County, which included the city of Ottawa at the time the university was founded.
