I can still use USERNAME@passport.com account to sent/receive emails in Hotmail, and it essentially is just another email address. This is contradictory to what your source (#9) says about Limited Accounts - "If you don't want to use an email account to access Windows Live ID, you can sign up for a limited account."

To access your AOL Mail account on these apps, you'll need to generate and use an app password. An app password is a randomly generated code that gives a non-AOL app permission to access your AOL account. You'll only need to provide this code once to sign in to your 3rd party email app.
