Karak, Kohat Division's third-largest city, is the largest city and namesake of Karak District. Having a population just over 50,000, it is Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's 24th largest city.
At the time of the 2017 census, the district had 132,985 households and a population of 1,111,266. Kohat had a sex ratio of 999 females per 1000 males and a literacy rate was 58.59% - 77.75% for males and 39.96% for females. 269,926 (24.29%) lived in urban areas. 28.66% of the population were under 10 years of age.

The Kohat University of Science and Technology (KUST) is a public university located at the Kohat District within the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. It was established in 2001. The university was inaugurated by the then Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Lt. Gen. Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah (late).
