History. The district formed on May 8, 1883, and began as a single room at the southwest corner of East Avenue and Baseline Road. Its first two-room school, which opened in 1890 on the southeast corner of Victoria and Etiwanda Avenues, grew into a four-room, two-story brick school in 1912.

Cucamonga Peak looms over Alta Loma which lies along the foothills of the Southern face of the San Gabriel Mountains. Alta Loma ( Spanish for "Tall Hill") is one of three unincorporated areas that became part of the city of Rancho Cucamonga, California, United States in 1977. [1]
The local school district was merged with the Etiwanda district in 1901. In 1957 the settlement was practically deserted, but there were still rabbit-proof stone walls marking boundaries of previous citrus orchards.
Upland High School, Montclair High School, Alta Loma High School, and Ontario High School were built between 1955 and 1967. Another school did not open until Etiwanda High School in 1983. Upland High School left the district and became part of the Upland Unified School District in 1991.
Summit Intermediate is one of the four middle schools in the Etiwanda School District and is located in the incorporated community of Rancho Cucamonga. Summit opened as a middle school in 1994. Before it was a middle school, it was an elementary school since 1964.
