The MTA Regional Bus Operations bus fleet is a fleet of buses in fixed-route service in New York City under the "MTA New York City Bus" (also known as New York City Transit or NYCT) and "MTA Bus" brands, both of which operate local, limited, express and Select Bus Service routes.
It was created in 2008 to consolidate all bus operations in New York City operated by the MTA. As of February 2018, MTA Regional Bus Operations runs 234 local routes, 71 express routes, and 20 Select Bus Service routes. Its fleet of 5,840 buses is the largest municipal bus fleet in the United States and operates 24/7.
Both maintenance facilities are responsible for the major reconstruction of buses in need of repair including engine rebuilding, transmission shops, and shops for body components on New York City Transit Authority's bus fleet, as well as repainting of buses.
The new buses feature lightweight electric traction drive systems that allow buses to recover up to 90 percent of energy during braking.
Fleet. The total MTA fleet includes 283 in service vehicles with one hydrogen fuel cell vehicle,143 propane vehicles, and 16 hybrid diesel or gasoline/electric. Fleet. Gillig Low Floor buses make up most of the fleet, replacing the Orion V and Gillig Phantom buses that made up most of the fleet until the late 2000s. In 2014, RTD began to receive New Flyer Xcelsior low floor buses for the free MetroRide and other routes.
In December 2019, the MTA unveiled its first 15 fully electric articulated buses, the XE60 fleet by New Flyer Industries, which now operate on various Michael J. Quill Depot SBS routes. As of December 2022, all SBS routes use 60-foot articulated buses except the B82 and S79.
