Map of the 62 counties of New York state. As of 2022, New York is divided into 62 counties. Aside from the five counties of New York City, each of these counties is subdivided into towns and cities, incorporated under state law. Towns can contain incorporated villages or unincorporated hamlets.
New York is located in the northeastern United States, in the Mid-Atlantic Census Bureau division. New York covers an area of 54,556 square miles (141,299 km 2) making it the 27th largest state by total area (but 30th by land area).
There are 62 counties in the U.S. state of New York. The first 12 were created immediately after the British took over the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam ; two of these counties were later abolished, their land going to Massachusetts. [1]
