The New York City Subway is a rapid transit system in the New York City boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. It is owned by the government of New York City and leased to the New York City Transit Authority, [14] an affiliate agency of the state-run Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). [15]
The MTA purchased and took over subway, elevated, streetcar, and bus operations from the Boston Elevated Railway in 1947. [15] In the 1950s, the MTA ran new subway extensions, while the last two streetcar lines running into the Pleasant Street Portal of the Tremont Street Subway were substituted with buses in 1953 and 1962.
