On February 17, 1987, at about 7:05 PM, a slowly moving 14-car Metro-North Hudson Line train collided with an empty Metro-North train returning to Grand Central on an elevated stretch of tracks at 140th Street and Park Avenue in the Bronx.

The line runs through some of the most remote and rural country found on the Metro-North system, and includes both its longest bridge, the Moodna Viaduct, and longest tunnel, the Otisville Tunnel . Norfolk Southern Railway (NS) shares the use of the track for local freight operations between Suffern and Port Jervis.
In February 2021, Metro-North filed to abandon a 41-mile (66 km) segment of the Beacon Line between Beacon and the New York-Connecticut border, pursuant to the Housatonic Railroad's trackage rights being resolved.

There are two middle tracks without platform access. An additional fifth track (called track 6) is located west of the southbound platform, but is not powered nor used.
