edit. The Red Line is a rapid transit line operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) as part of the MBTA subway system. The line runs south and east underground from Alewife station in North Cambridge through Somerville and Cambridge, surfacing to cross the Longfellow Bridge then returning to tunnels under Downtown Boston.

MTA can have many meanings, and I have not seen clear evidence that this is the most used of all possible meanings. Furthermore, the MTA's full name is indeed Metropolitan Transportation Authority; why would we use the abbreviation which is clearly just a shortening of the actual name?
