www .polk .edu. Polk State College, formerly Polk Community College, is a public college in Winter Haven, Florida. It is part of the Florida College System. [2] The college changed its name from Polk Community College in 2009 to reflect its first Bachelor's degree program. [3] Originally named Polk Junior College, it began classes in 1964.
Accepting its first students in 1975, the school enrolled an entering class of approximately 250 students. In 1983, the school was merged with Henderson State University's off-campus program to form Rich Mountain Community College, as part of the establishment of the Polk County community college district.

Any student wishing a high school education had to attend classes in Lakeland, located 25 miles away from Haines City. Clay Cut was the original name of this quaint little town. In 1883, when trains would pass through this Central Florida area, they were lost from sight because of the railroad tracks that were built so deep in the clay.
