While in High School he was active in the FFA, Hockey, Football, Track, and Choir. Kalk graduated in the top 10% of his class. Following High School graduation he attended Dakota College at Bottineau where he played hockey for the "Lumber Jacks" and studied Political Science and Natural Resources until his enlistment in the Marine Corps in 1987.

The men's team competes as an ACHA DI independent team and plays a schedule consisting ACHA DI members along with a number of games against local NJCAA schools, Dakota College at Bottineau Lumberjacks and newly formed Williston State College Tetons, as well as Canadian colleges. The Mon-Dak Conference (MDC) is a junior college conference for eight Tech and Community Colleges located in Montana and North Dakota, and it is a conference in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
