By early 2011, Nxumalo was Provincial Chairperson of the KwaZulu-Natal branch of the SACP, an office he held in parallel to his position as eThekwini Speaker, and, ahead of the 2011 local elections, he was considered the frontrunner to succeed longstanding incumbent Obed Mlaba as Mayor of eThekwini. [3] He was indeed elected in 2011. [1]
In December 2015, he was elected Regional Secretary of the eThekwini ANC, a full-time position; he served under Regional Chairperson Zandile Gumede, who subsequently became Mayor of eThekwini. [2] By 2018, it was widely reported that Ntuli and Gumede had a tense relationship, [3] [4] and Ntuli was touted as a possible successor to Gumede. [5]

Kaunda was born on 13 September 1972, in the town of Inanda outside Durban in the Natal Province.He became involved in politics at the age of fifteen, as he joined the Congress of South African Students (COSAS).

The party was formerly known as eThekwini ECOPEACE and eThekwini Ecoparty—eThekwini is the Zulu name for Durban, where the party is based. The Zulu party motto is Buhlakuleni uButhi, Yitshaleni iMithi , which translates to "Uproot Poisons, Replant Trees (or Medicine)".
